Parents

Parents, without exception, have the best intentions when it comes to parenting. However, parenting skills are not learnt through textbooks or formal lessons. They are learnt on the job constantly, to some extent by trial and error, but also with the right information/theory pertinent to the situation.

Successful parenting is the product of continual acquisition of knowledge, experimentation and practice. Best practices include:

  1. Being informed and aware of what one should know about the subject
  2. Applying theory learnt
  3. Adapting & practicing
  4. Being a good role model
  5. Creating a safe environment for making mistakes, being corrected & learning
  6. Sharing a common emotionally intelligent language
  7. Having evolving ground rules good for the family
  8. Validating each family member’s reality
  9. Sharing joys and grief's
  10. Learning new things together
  11. Choosing a lifestyle and habits that augment family learning and unity
  12. Handling adversity as a role model & seizing the teachable moment………

The list is not exhaustive. The point, though, is that 99% of parents will think there’s nothing new in it that they don’t already know. At the same time, probably less than 50% of all parents practice 75% of the items on the list consistently.

The familiar story of the gap between the head and the heart, intention and action.
